Venmo on Facebook Marketplace: the scams, and how to pay safely

Quick answer

Venmo is fine for paying a Marketplace seller in person once you’ve checked the item, but don’t count on Purchase Protection there. Venmo excludes items you collect in person unless you pay by scanning the seller’s Venmo QR code with Turn on for purchases switched on. For shipped items, tag the payment as a purchase. Never pay first, and never send it untagged to save the seller’s fee.

Most advice stops at “tag it as goods and services and you’re protected”. Venmo’s own rules are narrower, and the gap sits exactly where Marketplace deals happen: the local pickup. Venmo is a US service; in Canada, read our guide to Interac e-Transfer scams instead.

How Venmo Purchase Protection actually works

When you pay a personal Venmo profile, a switch labelled Turn on for purchases decides whether the payment is a purchase, and it has to be on when you pay. Venmo’s Purchase Protection Program covers eligible tagged payments for items that never arrive or are significantly not as described. If the switch doesn’t appear, Venmo says the option isn’t available for that payment.

Tagging costs the seller, not you. Venmo’s example: on a $100 purchase payment, the seller receives $98. That fee is why so many ordinary sellers ask you to leave the switch off, and why scammers ask too. An untagged payment has no Purchase Protection, and Venmo says it may be unable to recover money lost that way.

The bigger surprise is what a tag doesn’t cover. Venmo’s eligibility page excludes items you collect in person, or have someone collect for you, unless you paid through an in-person Venmo QR code transaction. Some categories are excluded however you pay.

Is a Venmo payment covered by Purchase Protection?

Meta won’t fill the gap. Its Purchase Protection covers eligible orders paid through Facebook checkout, not money sent through Venmo. And Venmo’s own scam page says it’s best not to exchange payments with people you don’t know.

Paying with Venmo at a meetup, step by step

At a local pickup, your real protection is seeing the item before money moves; a Venmo QR payment adds a chance of cover on top. Pick a busy, well-lit spot (safe exchange zones lists good ones), then:

  1. Agree the price in Messenger first. Keep the chat; it records what the seller promised.
  2. Inspect the item properly. Power it on and try it. For a phone, check it isn’t locked or stolen before anyone mentions payment.
  3. Ask the seller to show their Venmo QR code. Every personal Venmo profile has one in the app.
  4. Scan it with your own Venmo app, then check that the name and photo it brings up match the person in front of you and their Marketplace profile.
  5. Enter the amount and switch on Turn on for purchases. Typing the seller’s name into search instead of scanning skips the in-person exception.
  6. Send it, and wait while the seller confirms it in their own app. Don’t walk off mid-deal, and don’t pay twice because they say it “didn’t come through”.

If the seller refuses the purchase switch, offer to cover the fee. If they still say no, pay cash or leave. Refusing a tagged payment for a $40 lamp is probably just thrift. Refusing it for a $900 laptop asks you to carry all the risk.

Paying with Venmo for a shipped item

If the listing offers Facebook checkout, use it: Meta’s Purchase Protection covers eligible checkout orders. A seller with checkout available who asks for Venmo instead is the opening move in many Marketplace shipping scams.

If Venmo is the only way, protect the payment:

  • Tag it with Turn on for purchases, whatever the seller says about fees.
  • Screenshot the listing and the chat before you pay. Scam listings vanish fast.
  • Check the tracking number on the carrier’s own website, typed in yourself, not through a link the seller sends.
  • Dispute quickly if nothing arrives. Venmo allows 180 days from the date you paid for item-not-received and not-as-described disputes.

Vehicles are excluded however you pay, so “the car is with the shipping company, Venmo me and it’s yours” has no safety net (see Marketplace car scams). Rent and housing deposits are excluded too, so a Venmo deposit on a rental you haven’t toured has no cover either.

Venmo scams Marketplace buyers meet

Nearly every Venmo scam on Marketplace does one of two things: gets your money before you see the item, or gets it in a form that can’t be pulled back. These scripts follow the patterns Venmo and Meta describe.

Venmo scripts on Marketplace, and what to do
What the seller saysWhat is going onWhat to do
“Venmo me a $50 deposit and I’ll hold it for you”Money before you see anything; the item may not exist, and a local pickup isn’t covered anywayOffer to come today instead. See the deposit scam guide
“Don’t tick purchase, I’m not paying the fee”An untagged payment can’t be claimed backOffer to add the fee, or pay cash at the handover
“I’m out of town, Venmo first and my brother will drop it off”A seller who can’t meet, and an item someone else delivers isn’t coveredWalk away
A friend’s profile, or one copying their name and photo, selling cheap concert ticketsImpersonation, one of Venmo’s listed common scamsCall your friend on a number you already have
“Venmo just texted you a code, read it to me”An attempt to sign in to your accountNever share it. Venmo says its agents will never ask for the code

Two more catch people who also sell. A buyer sends a screenshot or an email saying their Venmo payment is “pending” until you ship: Meta says never to trust screenshots of payments, and Venmo only emails from addresses ending in venmo.com, so check your own app. Or a stranger pays you, says it was a mistake and asks for it back. Venmo warns that money may come from a stolen card and be reversed later, taking your “refund” with it. Don’t send anything back; contact Venmo support.

None of this makes Venmo unsafe. It makes Venmo close to cash once sent, and the safest ways to pay on Marketplace share one rule: money last, after you’ve seen the item.

Already paid by Venmo and it went wrong?

Move fast; every step is easier in the first hour.

  1. If you tagged it as a purchase, open a dispute. Find the payment in your Venmo activity and report a problem with it. For an item that never arrived or was significantly not as described, you have 180 days from the date you paid. Attach the listing and chat screenshots.
  2. If you didn’t tag it, contact Venmo support now and ask them to reverse it. The FTC gives the same advice for any money transfer app. Venmo warns untagged payments may not be recoverable, so don’t wait.
  3. Call your bank or card issuer if a debit or credit card funded the payment.
  4. Report the seller on Facebook from the listing or their profile.
  5. File a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. It won’t return your money, but it helps law enforcement build cases.
  6. Ignore anyone offering to recover the money for a fee. That is a second scam aimed at people who were just scammed.

Venmo, Zelle, Cash App and PayPal on Marketplace

Payment apps for a Marketplace purchase
MethodProtection for a Marketplace buyUse it for
VenmoTagged purchases of shipped items; in person only through the seller’s QR codeThe handover, or a shipped item tagged as a purchase
ZelleZelle says it has no protection program for payments you authorizeFace to face, once you hold the item
Cash AppTreat it like cash; the payment methods guide has the detailFace to face, once you hold the item
PayPalGoods and Services can be covered; PayPal says Friends and Family isn’tShipped items, as Goods and Services
Facebook checkoutMeta’s Purchase Protection on eligible ordersShipped items, whenever it’s offered

For a shipped item, checkout beats a tagged Venmo payment, which beats Zelle or Cash App. At a pickup, the order matters more than the app: inspect, then pay.

What Sift flags around a Venmo deal

Sift is a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace. There is no account to make, it works right in Chrome (and in Edge and Brave) on a computer, and it takes about a minute to set up. It puts a red chip on listings that show common scam patterns, naming the sign it found.

Paying by Venmo at a handover is reasonable, so the app isn’t the warning sign. Sift flags the patterns Venmo scams are built on:

  • Pay first for a request to pay a deposit or pay before pickup.
  • Off-site contact when a listing pushes you to text, email or another messaging app.
  • Seller away when the seller says they’re out of town and can’t meet.
  • Ships only when something you would normally collect in person is offered by shipping only.
  • Very low price when the price is far below similar listings.
An iPhone listing that asks for a $50 e-transfer to hold it and gives a number to text. Sift marks it Pay first and Off-site contact and quotes the seller’s words.

Sift reads the listing, never your Messenger chats, so a Venmo deposit request made only in a message won’t be flagged, and a listing with no chips isn’t proof it is safe. Each chip names a sign to look at; Sift never calls a listing a scam. It doesn’t work in the Facebook app. See Sift’s scam checker, or whether Facebook Marketplace is safe for the wider picture.

Questions people ask

Does Venmo protect Facebook Marketplace purchases?

Some of them. A shipped item paid with a payment tagged as a purchase can be covered by Venmo’s Purchase Protection. Items you collect in person are excluded unless you paid by scanning the seller’s Venmo QR code, and cars, boats, RVs and rent are never covered. Meta’s Purchase Protection only covers Facebook checkout.

Is it safe to pay with Venmo friends and family on Marketplace?

Only when you are holding the item and happy with it. “Friends and family” is PayPal’s phrase; on Venmo it means paying without Turn on for purchases, which leaves you with no Purchase Protection, and Venmo says it may be unable to recover that money. Never send an untagged payment for anything you haven’t seen.

Why does the seller want me to turn off “purchase” on Venmo?

The seller pays a fee on purchase payments (Venmo’s example is $98 received on $100), and an untagged payment can’t be claimed back. Most sellers are just saving a couple of dollars. A scammer is removing your only route to a refund. Offer to add the fee, or pay cash at the pickup.

Can I get my money back from Venmo if I was scammed?

Sometimes. If you tagged the payment as a purchase and the item never came or was significantly not as described, open a dispute in the app within 180 days of paying. If you didn’t tag it, contact Venmo support straight away and ask them to reverse it, and call your card issuer if a card funded it. Venmo warns untagged payments may not be recoverable.

Can I mark a Venmo payment as a purchase after I’ve sent it?

Plan on no. Venmo treats tagging as a choice you make when you pay, and its help pages offer no way to add it later (or to recategorize a tagged payment). If you sent an untagged payment for an item and something is wrong, contact Venmo support as soon as possible and keep the listing and chat as evidence.

Is Venmo or Zelle safer for Facebook Marketplace?

For a shipped item, Venmo, because a tagged purchase can be covered and Zelle says it has no protection program for payments you authorize. At a local pickup they are much the same, since an ordinary Venmo payment for a collected item isn’t covered. Either way, see and test the item before any money moves.

Does Venmo cover a local pickup?

Usually not. Venmo excludes items you collect in person or have someone collect for you, except an in-person payment made by scanning the seller’s Venmo QR code with Turn on for purchases switched on. Vehicles stay excluded either way. At a meetup, inspect the item first, then scan the code and tag the payment.
