Sift’s Marketplace filters: hide what you’d skip, keep what you want
Quick answer
Sift is a free browser extension that adds the filters Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji leave out, and applies them every time a page loads: sponsored listings and Top Ads, sold and pending, already seen, too far, blocked words, dealers, wanted posts, placeholder prices, “Ships to you” and old listings. Hidden listings leave the grid, and a small pill shows what went and why. No account, nothing to set up twice.
What Sift can hide
Each filter is a switch. Turn on the ones you want; the rest stay out of the way. Sponsored listings and sold items are hidden from the start, and listings you’ve opened are dimmed. Everything else waits until you switch it on.
| Filter | What it hides | How Sift decides | Kijiji |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sponsored | Paid listings placed among local ones | The Sponsored label on Facebook; the Top Ads section on Kijiji | Yes (Top Ads) |
| Ships to you | Items posted to you instead of collected, and partner listings such as eBay’s | The label on the card | Facebook only |
| Sold and pending | Items that are gone or on hold, Saved page included | The status on the card | Where shown |
| Already seen | Listings you have opened | Sift notes each listing you open. Dim them, hide them, or outline the unseen ones | Yes |
| Too far | Listings beyond your radius | Distance from the home you set, worked out on your computer | Yes |
| Blocked and required words | Listings that mention a word you block, or miss one you require | Whole words in the title and text, with phrases, a prefix star and accents ignored | Yes |
| Places | Places you block, or anywhere outside the places you allow | The place named on the listing | Yes |
| Dealers | Dealer listings, or listings worded like one | Dealer accounts and wording such as “financing”, “OAC”, stock numbers, “plus tax and licensing”. Hide them, or just tag them | Yes |
| Wanted posts | Buyers asking for things | Titles that start with Wanted, ISO, WTB or Looking for; Kijiji’s wanted ads | Yes |
| Free and placeholder prices | $1, $123, $1234 and “free” listings that really mean message for price | The price, and bait wording in the listing | Yes |
| Old listings | Anything older than a day, a week or a month | The posting time, when the site shows it | Yes |
| Reposted | The same item deleted and listed again to look new | Sift’s own record of listings it has seen | Yes |
| By hand | Any card you choose | Press h over it; 6 seconds to undo | Yes |
For cars there are more: a model-year range, a maximum mileage in km or miles, and a switch for salvage, rebuilt, flood, as-is and for-parts titles. They have their own page, Sift’s car filters.
Distance gets its own page too. Facebook’s radius is a rough circle that shipped and sponsored listings ignore; Sift measures from the home you set, using a built-in list of 2,000+ cities, and never sends your location anywhere. See the distance filter.
Block words that behave
Facebook Marketplace has no way to exclude a word from a search. Sift’s blocked words are where most people start, so they are built to do what you mean:
- Whole words only. Blocking “art” doesn’t hide “cart” or “smart TV”.
- Phrases in quotes. “message for price” hides that phrase, not every listing with “price” in it.
- A star for endings. financ* catches financing, financed and finance.
- Accents ignored. Blocking “pieces” also catches “pièces”.
- Required words. Keep only listings that mention any of your words, or all of them. A word written as +carbon is always required.
- Paste a whole list. One per line, or separated by commas.
Starter packs cover the usual suspects in English and French, one click each: broken or for parts, wanted posts, message for price, rentals and leases, dealers, and dropshipping. Point at a pack to see every word in it.
Two examples. Searching “dresser” with the wanted pack and the parts pack on clears out “ISO dresser” and “dresser, missing drawer, for parts”. Searching “road bike” with +carbon required leaves only bikes whose listing says carbon. The full method, with ready-to-copy word lists, is in how to exclude words from a Marketplace search.
Nothing disappears for good
Hidden listings leave the grid and the grid closes up, so you scroll through less. But you can always see what went:
- The pill at the bottom of the page counts what Sift hid on this page (“12 hidden”).
- Peek. Click the pill and every hidden listing comes back, faded, with the reason it went: “Blocked word: financing”, “41 km away”, “Already viewed”, “Wanted post”. Press Esc to leave.
- Dim instead of hide. If you’d rather keep everything on screen, set filters to dim the listings they catch.
- Undo. Hide a card by hand with h and you get 6 seconds to take it back.
- One switch. Turn Sift off from the popup and Marketplace is exactly as Facebook made it.
Presets
Different searches need different rules. A bike hunt wants a 15 km radius, “carbon” required and the parts pack on; a sofa search wants a bigger radius and no rentals. Save each setup as a preset (“Bike hunt”, “Furniture under 200”) and switch between them from the popup.
A preset saves the whole browsing setup: filters, starter packs, vehicle limits, the signals you show and how listings are hidden or dimmed. Your home location and search alerts stay as they are.
Newest first, every time
Facebook’s default sort is its own idea of relevance, and it creeps back whenever you start a new search. Sift can force sort by newest on every search, so the freshest listings are always at the top. Around that:
- NEW and age badges. A NEW badge marks listings that appeared since your last visit, and an age badge (3h, 2d, 1w) shows how old each one is, when the site says.
- Maximum age. Hide anything older than a day, a week or a month.
- New only. From the popup, show only listings Sift has never shown you, counted from that moment. Reset starts the count again.
Where it runs, and what it doesn’t do
Sift runs in Chrome, Edge and Brave on a computer. It doesn’t work in the Facebook or Kijiji apps or in a phone’s browser. It is Coming soon to the Chrome Web Store.
It only ever changes what you see. Sift never posts, messages or buys for you, needs no account, has no analytics and no server. Your settings and listing history stay in your browser; clear them any time from the Data page. The details are in the privacy policy. Sift is independent and not affiliated with Meta, Facebook or Kijiji.

Questions people ask
What does Sift hide on Facebook Marketplace?
Sponsored listings, “Ships to you” and partner listings, sold and pending items (Saved page included), listings you’ve already opened, listings beyond your radius, anything that mentions a word you block or misses a word you require, dealers, wanted posts, free and placeholder prices, old listings and, if you choose, reposts. Each one is a switch you control.
Will I miss a good listing?
You shouldn’t. Every hidden listing is one click away. Click the pill to peek at what was hidden, with the reason for each (“Blocked word: financing”, “41 km away”), and bring back anything you want. If you’d rather see everything, set filters to dim instead of hide.
Does Sift slow Facebook down?
Sift works on the listings Facebook has already loaded, inside your browser, and has no server of its own to talk to. Search alerts are the one part that loads pages in the background, and only for the searches you choose to watch.
Does Sift work on Kijiji?
Yes. The same filters, distance limit and badges work on kijiji.ca search results and category pages. On Kijiji, the sponsored switch hides Top Ads, which ignore Kijiji’s own sort order.
Do I need an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for. Sift keeps your settings and listing history in your browser, and syncs settings through your browser’s own sync if you have it turned on.
