Why Facebook Marketplace shows listings outside your radius

Quick answer

Facebook Marketplace’s radius is approximate. It is a straight-line circle drawn from the location Marketplace has for you, usually a town or postal code rather than your front door, and shipped, sponsored and suggested listings can ignore it. Set your location by hand, pick the smallest radius that still shows results and choose Local pickup. On a computer, Sift, a free browser extension, enforces a hard radius from your home.

How the Marketplace radius actually works

When you search Marketplace, Facebook takes a location point (the town, neighbourhood or postal code in your location setting) and draws a circle around it at the radius you picked. Listings whose location falls inside the circle count as nearby. Two details make that circle leakier than it looks.

First, it is a straight line. Marketplace doesn’t account for rivers, lakes, bridges or the highway you would have to sit on. Business Insider’s Katie Notopoulos found that a 4-mile search from downtown Brooklyn returned listings in New Jersey, across the water and a toll bridge away, and that searches in suburban Connecticut reached across Long Island Sound. When she asked Meta about it, the company didn’t seem sure it was a mistake.

Second, both ends of that line are rough. Your end is a point Facebook picks for your area, not your address. The seller’s end is usually just a town: a listing card says “Oshawa, ON”, not a street. CarSnipe, which builds Marketplace search tools, puts it plainly: a 30-mile radius doesn’t mean every listing is within 30 miles.

So the radius is a decent first cut and a poor fence. Where towns sit close together, as they do around Toronto, Vancouver or Montreal, it lets in a lot.

Five reasons you see far-away listings

1. The circle starts from a point, not your home

If your location is set to a big city, the circle is drawn from somewhere near its middle. Live at the edge of Calgary or Mississauga and a 10 km radius can cover neighbourhoods you would never drive to while missing the suburb next door. Entering your postal code moves the centre closer to you.

2. Shipped items ignore distance

Listings marked “Ships to you” come from sellers who will post the item rather than meet. Marketplace mixes them into local results without regard for your radius, which is why a 5 km search can show something from another province. Our guide to hiding sponsored and shipped listings covers every way to clear them.

3. Sponsored and suggested results

Ads are placed by Facebook, and so are the “suggested” listings that fill in when your search has few exact matches. Neither is guaranteed to respect your radius.

4. Sellers choose their listing’s location

The place on a listing is the place the seller picked when they posted it. Some choose the nearest big city to reach more buyers, so a couch that says Toronto can be in a town 40 minutes out. Check the map on the listing page, or ask before you agree a pickup.

5. The radius options are coarse

Marketplace offers a fixed list of distances rather than any number you like, so the step from too few results to far too many can be a big one.

How to fix it on a computer

  1. Open Marketplace at facebook.com/marketplace and run your search.
  2. Click your location in the left column. It shows a place name and the current radius.
  3. Type your postal code (or ZIP code) instead of your city name, and pick it from the list. This puts the centre of the circle near you rather than downtown.
  4. Choose the smallest radius that still gives you results. Start small and step up only if the page runs dry.
  5. Click Apply.
  6. Set Delivery method to Local pickup in the filters, so items that ship drop out.
  7. Sort by distance if the Sort by menu offers it, so the nearest listings come first.
  8. Check the filters on your next search. Many people find Local pickup and the sort don’t carry over.

How to fix it in the app

  1. Tap Marketplace, then the location shown near the top of the page.
  2. Enter your postal code or drag the map pin to your street, then set the radius and tap Apply.
  3. Tap Filters on your search results, set Delivery method to Local pickup and apply.
  4. Re-check the filters each time you search for something new.

Marketplace in a phone’s web browser has fewer filters than the app or the desktop site. If you can’t find the location or delivery controls there, switch to the app. If your location keeps jumping to another city entirely, that is a different problem with its own fixes: see how to change your location on Facebook Marketplace.

Kilometres or miles?

Marketplace has no unit switch of its own. The unit appears to follow your Facebook language: people in Canada, the UK and Australia report seeing miles when Facebook is set to English (US) and kilometres after switching to English (UK). If your distances look wrong, open Settings & privacy, then Settings, then Language and region, change the language and reload Marketplace.

For reference: 10 miles is 16 km, 40 miles is 64 km, 100 miles is 161 km and 500 miles is 805 km.

A hard radius from your home

On a computer, Sift closes the gap the radius leaves. It is a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji that runs in Chrome, Edge and Brave. You set your home once, picking it from 2,000+ built-in cities and regions or using your position once, and choose a distance in kilometres or miles.

Sift then reads the town on each listing card, measures the straight line from your home and hides anything past your line. Each listing that stays gets a small distance badge (“12 km”), so you can see at a glance what is a short drive and what is a day trip. Hidden listings keep their reason, “32 km away”, in the pill at the bottom of the page, so you can peek at what went.

Because Sift measures from your home rather than from wherever Facebook thinks you are, a wrong Marketplace location stops mattering. It also hides “Ships to you” and partner listings with their own switches, and all of the measuring happens on your computer: your home isn’t sent anywhere. Sift can only be as precise as the town on the card, and it doesn’t run in the Facebook app or a phone browser. More on how Sift measures distance.

How Kijiji’s radius works

Kijiji also searches a circle around a location you choose: a city or region, or a postal code or address, with a distance such as “Within 10 km”. It has the same straight-line limit, and Kijiji’s own help page says Top Ads aren’t affected by your sort settings, so they sit above everything. Sift applies the same hard radius from your home on Kijiji; see Sift for Kijiji.

Questions people ask

Why does Facebook Marketplace show me items far away?

Three things let them in. Shipped and sponsored listings ignore your radius, the radius is a straight line drawn from a point for your area rather than your address, and sellers choose the town their listing shows. Set Delivery method to Local pickup, enter your postal code as your location and use a smaller radius.

Is Facebook Marketplace local only?

No. Marketplace mixes local listings with items that ship from anywhere, plus ads and, in some countries, partner listings such as eBay’s. To see only things you can collect in person, set Delivery method to Local pickup in the filters, and check it again when you start a new search.

How do I change Facebook Marketplace from miles to km?

Marketplace has no unit setting of its own. The unit appears to follow your Facebook language, and people report miles with English (US) and kilometres with English (UK). Change it under Settings & privacy, then Settings, then Language and region, and reload Marketplace.

Can you sort Facebook Marketplace by distance?

Often, yes. On the desktop site and in the app, Sort by usually offers Distance, nearest first, though it isn’t always there and phone browsers show fewer options. Sorting only reorders results; it doesn’t remove far ones. Sift shows the distance on every card and can hide anything past your limit.

What is the biggest radius on Facebook Marketplace?

The largest option is 500 miles, about 805 km. There is no nationwide setting. To browse another region, change your Marketplace location to a city there; shipped listings from further away will still appear unless you choose Local pickup.
