Facebook Marketplace filters: what each one does and how to fix them
Quick answer
Facebook Marketplace can filter by location and radius, price, condition, date listed and delivery method, plus extra details for vehicles and rentals, and sort by newest or nearest. The filters often reset when you start a new search, they’re missing in phone browsers, and sponsored and “Ships to you” listings ignore them. Use the app or a computer, re-apply filters after every search, and see the fixes below.
Every Facebook Marketplace filter, explained
Marketplace keeps its filters in the left column on a computer and behind a Filters button in the app. Here is each one, where to find it, and what tends to go wrong.
| Filter | Options | On a computer | In the app | Known problems |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Location and radius | A city or postal code, and a radius from 1 to 500 km (or miles) | Click the location under Filters | Tap the location at the top of Marketplace | A straight-line circle; shipped and sponsored items ignore it |
| Sort by | Suggested, price low to high or high to low, date listed (newest first), distance (nearest first) | Sort by, under Filters | Filters, then Sort by | Falls back to Suggested; missing in phone browsers |
| Price | Minimum and maximum | Min and Max boxes | Filters, then Price | $1 and $1,234 placeholder prices slip through |
| Condition | New, Used – like new, Used – good, Used – fair | Condition | Filters, then Condition | The seller picks it, and “like new” is generous |
| Date listed | All, last 24 hours, last 7 days, last 30 days | Date listed | Filters, then Date listed | A deleted and reposted listing counts as new |
| Delivery method | All, Local pickup, Shipping | Delivery method | Filters, then Delivery method | Often resets between searches |
| Vehicles | Make, model, year, price, vehicle type and more | Open the Vehicles category | Open the Vehicles category | Sellers leave fields blank; no seller-type filter |
| Property rentals | Bedrooms, bathrooms, type, price and more | Open the Property rentals category | Same | Category filters vanish if you search from the main box |
Meta’s help article on sorting covers sort by distance and by newest; the rest of the controls appear and disappear by category and region. If a filter in this table isn’t on your screen, check you are in the app or on a computer, not a phone’s browser.
Why your Facebook Marketplace filters aren’t working
Most “broken filter” complaints come down to one of these:
- They reset. Start a new search, switch category or come back from a listing, and price, condition, delivery and sort can quietly go back to their defaults. The results look broken; really, the filter is just off.
- You’re in a phone browser. Marketplace in Safari or Chrome on a phone has no sort control and very few filters. The app and a computer have the full set.
- The radius is approximate. Marketplace draws a straight-line circle around your location. Business Insider’s Katie Notopoulos found a 4-mile search from downtown Brooklyn turning up items across the water in New Jersey: inside the circle, but an hour and a toll away. More in why Marketplace shows listings outside your radius.
- Some listings ignore filters. Sponsored listings and “Ships to you” items are slotted into results whatever your radius says. That is why a 10 km search can show something from across the country. The guide to hiding sponsored and shipped listings covers what you can do.
- Sellers fill things in wrong. A $1 price to game the price sort, a car with no year or mileage, a couch in the Free category. Filters can only read what sellers type.
- “Suggested” is Facebook’s order, not yours. Meta says Marketplace gives each listing a score from signals such as location, category, price and what you’ve clicked and saved, then sorts by that score. Unless you change Sort by, you are seeing Facebook’s guess.
- The app or site is glitching. An old app version or a stale cache can hide the Filters button or stop changes from applying.
How to fix Facebook Marketplace filters
Work down the list for your device. Most people are fixed by step 1 or 2.
On a computer
- Re-apply after every search. Glance at the left column before you scroll. If Sort by says Suggested, change it.
- Bookmark the filtered search. Set your filters, then bookmark the page. The web address keeps most of your choices (for example
sortBy=creation_time_descendfor newest first,minPriceandmaxPrice,daysSinceListed=1), so the bookmark opens the search exactly as you left it. - Search inside a category for vehicles and rentals. Open the category first, then search, so its own filters appear.
- Hard refresh with Ctrl Shift R (Windows) or Cmd Shift R (Mac).
- Turn extensions off one at a time, ad blockers first. A blocker rule that is too broad can break the filter column.
- Log out and back in, or try another browser, to rule out a stuck session.
- Check your location. Click it and make sure the city and radius are what you expect.
In the Facebook app
- Update the app from the App Store or Google Play.
- Close it fully and reopen it.
- Clear the cache. On Android: Settings, Apps, Facebook, Storage, Clear cache. On iPhone there is no cache button: offload the app (Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Facebook, Offload App) and reinstall it.
- Check location and radius from the location at the top of Marketplace.
- Re-apply filters after each new search, as on a computer.
- Try a computer if a filter is still missing. Some options arrive on the desktop site first.
What no Marketplace filter can do
Even with every filter working, some things are out of reach. Each has its own guide:
- Exclude a word (“wanted”, “parts”, “message for price”): there is no exclude box. See how to exclude words from a Marketplace search.
- Hide sponsored listings for good: you can only hide them one at a time.
- Hide listings you’ve already opened, or sold items on your Saved page: see hiding sold and already-seen listings.
- Hide dealers: Marketplace has no seller-type filter for cars.
- Enforce a hard radius: the circle leaks, and shipped items ignore it.
- Keep newest first: sort order resets; the newest-first guide has the workarounds.
Filters that stay on, on a computer
The fixes above are about getting Facebook’s filters back each time. Sift takes the other route. It is a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji that adds its own filters on top and applies them every time a page loads, on every search, without you touching anything.
It hides what Facebook’s filters can’t reach: sponsored and “Ships to you” listings, sold and pending ones, listings you’ve opened, anything beyond a radius measured from your home, listings with words you block, dealers, wanted posts and placeholder prices. It can force newest first on every search. Presets save the whole setup, so “Bike hunt” and “Furniture under 200” are one click apart. And nothing vanishes without a trace: the pill counts what was hidden, and peek shows each listing with its reason.
Sift works in Chrome, Edge and Brave on a computer, not in the app. It runs alongside Facebook’s own filters, so use both. Every filter Sift adds is listed on its own page, and there is a side-by-side table of Sift and Marketplace’s built-in filters.
Kijiji filters
Kijiji’s own filters go further than Facebook’s in a couple of places: you can show Offering or Wanted ads only, and filter by owner or dealer. Its sort options are Best Match, Most Recent, Least Recent, Lowest Price and Highest Price, but Kijiji’s help page says Top Ads are not affected by sort settings, so they always come first. Sift for Kijiji hides them and applies the same filters there.
Questions people ask
Why are my Facebook Marketplace filters not showing?
You are probably on Marketplace in a phone’s web browser, where sort and most filters are missing. Use the Facebook app or a computer instead. In the app, update to the latest version, and open a category (Vehicles, Property rentals) to see the filters that belong to it.
Why does Facebook Marketplace ignore my filters?
Some listings don’t follow them. Sponsored listings and “Ships to you” items are mixed into results regardless of your radius and most filters, the radius itself is a rough straight-line circle, and filters can reset to their defaults when you start a new search or switch category.
Can you filter Facebook Marketplace by date listed?
Yes, on a computer and in the app. Choose Date listed (for example the last 24 hours), or set Sort by to Date listed, newest first. Both tend to reset between searches, so check them each time, or bookmark a search with the filters already set.
Can I save filters on Facebook Marketplace?
Not as a set. You can save a search to get notifications, but your price, condition and delivery choices don’t come with it. On a computer, bookmarking the search page keeps most filters in its web address, and Sift’s presets save a whole filter setup you switch in one click.
Is there a filter to exclude words on Facebook Marketplace?
No. Marketplace has no exclude box, and Facebook documents no search operators such as a minus sign. Specific search terms, category pages and a minimum price help. On a computer, Sift hides any listing that mentions a word you block.
