How to see the newest listings first on Facebook Marketplace
Quick answer
On a computer, open the filters on a Marketplace search and set Sort by to Date listed: Newest first. In the Facebook app, tap Filters and choose the same. The Date listed filter can also limit results to the last 24 hours. If the option is missing, which happens in phone browsers, use the app or the desktop site. Marketplace often forgets the choice, so check it on each new search.
| Where | Sort by newest | Date listed filter | Remembers it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer (facebook.com) | Sort by: Date listed, newest first | Last 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days | Often resets |
| Facebook app | Filters, then Sort by | Yes | Often resets |
| Phone browser | Often missing | Often missing | n/a |
| Kijiji | Sort: Most Recent | Age shows on each ad | Top Ads ignore it |
Sort by newest on a computer
- Search on facebook.com/marketplace. Type what you want and press Enter.
- Find Sort by in the filters in the left column. It usually says Suggested.
- Choose Date listed: Newest first.
- Optional: set Date listed to Last 24 hours to hide anything older.
- Look at the address bar. When the newest sort is on, the web address ends with
sortBy=creation_time_descend. Bookmark that address and the sort comes with it.
The bookmark trick is the most reliable way to keep the sort on a computer. A Toronto couch search, for example, looks like facebook.com/marketplace/toronto/search?query=couch&sortBy=creation_time_descend. Some older guides spell the parameter sort_by; in October 2026 the desktop site used sortBy.
Sort by newest in the app
On iPhone and Android the steps are the same:
- Open Marketplace and search for the item.
- Tap Filters (or the Sort by chip above the results, if your version shows one).
- Under Sort by, choose Date listed: Newest first.
- Under Date listed, choose Last 24 hours if you only want fresh listings.
- Tap See results or Apply.
The app has no web address to bookmark, so check the sort each time you start a new search.
Sort missing or not working?
- You’re in a phone browser. Marketplace in Safari or Chrome on a phone shows fewer filters, and the sort is often one of the missing ones. Use the app, or a computer.
- You’re on a category page. Browsing a category (Vehicles, Property rentals) shows that category’s own filters. Type a search instead and the full Sort by menu comes back.
- It reset. Changing the search words, opening a listing and coming back, or returning the next day can all put the order back to Suggested. Check the sort, or use a bookmarked address on a computer.
- It isn’t strictly newest. Even sorted by newest, sponsored listings and items that ship to you still appear in the grid, and they don’t necessarily follow your sort. Our guide to hiding sponsored and shipped listings deals with those.
How to tell when a listing was posted
Marketplace doesn’t show a listing’s age in the results grid. Open the listing: under the title and price it says when it was listed, for example “Listed 3 hours ago in Scarborough, ON”.
That time can mislead. A seller who deletes a listing and posts it again, often to bump it back to the top of newest first, gets a fresh “Listed 1 hour ago”. If you’re sure you saw the same photos last week, you probably did. A relisted item is often a sign the seller is ready to take less; see how to negotiate on Marketplace.
Is Marketplace first come, first served?
Not by any rule. The seller decides who gets the item, and plenty of sellers skip the first “Is this still available?” in favour of the buyer who names a time. Being early still matters, because a well-priced listing can collect a pile of messages quickly. The winning combination is early and clear: “Hi, I can pick up the desk today at 6. Is CA$80 OK?”
Newest first on every search, automatically
On a computer, Sift, a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji, takes the checking out of it. It can sort every Marketplace and Kijiji search by newest first, so you never have to set it again. Each card gets a small badge with its age (“3h”, “2d”, “1w”), and listings that are new since your last visit get a NEW badge.
If you only care about fresh listings, set a maximum age (“nothing older than 3 days”) and the rest leave the page, or switch on “only new from now on” to see nothing but what appears after that moment. Sift can also hide listings you’ve already opened, and mark reposted ones with ↻ Reposted so a relisted item doesn’t pass as new. It runs in Chrome, Edge and Brave on a computer. See everything Sift can filter, or get notified of new listings instead of checking.
Kijiji
Kijiji’s sort menu has Most Recent, alongside Best Match, Least Recent, Lowest Price and Highest Price, and each ad shows its age (“3 h”, “6 d”). One catch: Kijiji’s help page says Top Ads aren’t affected by sort settings, so paid ads still sit at the top of a newest-first search. Our guide to finding deals on Kijiji covers how to read past them.
Questions people ask
Can you sort Facebook Marketplace by date?
Yes. On the desktop site and in the app, set Sort by to Date listed, newest first. The separate Date listed filter narrows results to the last 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days. Both sit in the search filters, and both can reset when you start a new search.
Why can’t I sort by newest on Facebook Marketplace?
Marketplace in a phone’s web browser has fewer controls than the app and the desktop site, and the sort can be hidden on some category pages. Run a keyword search in the app or on a computer and the Sort by option should be there.
How do I see when a Facebook Marketplace listing was posted?
Open the listing. Under the title and price it says when it was listed, such as “Listed 3 hours ago”. The grid of results doesn’t show it. A seller who deletes and reposts an item resets that time, so an old listing can look new.
Does Facebook Marketplace remember sort by newest?
Often not. Many people find it goes back to Suggested when they change the search or come back later. Bookmarking a search with the newest sort in its web address keeps it on a computer, and Sift applies newest first to every search automatically.
Is Facebook Marketplace first come, first served?
No. There is no rule; the seller decides who gets the item. Many sellers go with the first person who offers a firm pickup time, so being early helps, but a clear message often beats a quick “Is this still available?”.
