Facebook Marketplace search not working? Why, and how to fix it

Quick answer

Facebook Marketplace search matches your words loosely, mixes in suggested, sponsored and shipped listings, and ranks everything by its own idea of relevance, so results drift from what you typed. When search seems broken, the cause is usually your location, filters that reset, or an app glitch. Check those first, then sort by newest and search inside a category.

Is Facebook Marketplace down right now?

Rule this out first, because no fix on your end helps during an outage.

  1. Check a crowd-report site such as Downdetector’s Facebook page. A spike of reports in the last hour, from many places, means it isn’t you.
  2. Try another device or network. Open Marketplace on your phone over mobile data and on a computer. If one works and the other doesn’t, the problem is local.
  3. Don’t rely on Meta’s status page. Meta Status covers business tools such as ads and messaging platforms for companies, not the Facebook app, so a green page there tells you little.

An outage tends to look the same everywhere: an empty grid, “Something went wrong”, searches that return nothing at all. A local problem is narrower. Search works but the results are odd, or Marketplace works on one device and not another. That is what the rest of this page is about.

Why results don’t match your search

Marketplace search was never meant to be a strict word match. Several things pull the results away from what you typed:

  • Loose matching. A search for “dresser” brings back “dresser wanted”, “dresser for parts”, nightstands and mirrors. Marketplace treats your words as a starting point, not a rule.
  • Suggestions. When there are only a few close matches near you, the page fills up with related items so it never looks empty.
  • Ads and shipped items. Sponsored listings and “Ships to you” items are slotted in among local results whatever your filters say.
  • Ranking. Meta explains that Marketplace scores each listing using signals such as its location, category, condition and price, and your own activity (what you click, save and spend time on), then orders results by that score. Two people searching the same word see different pages.
  • Your location point. Distance is measured in a straight line from your Marketplace location. Business Insider’s Katie Notopoulos found a 4-mile search from downtown Brooklyn returning items across the water in New Jersey. If your location is set to the wrong neighbourhood, or to a city you visited, local results shift with it. See how to change your Marketplace location.

Fixes, in order

Start at the top. Each step takes a minute and most people are sorted by step 3.

On any device

  1. Check your location and radius. Tap or click the location shown at the top of Marketplace. Set the city you are actually in and a radius you would drive.
  2. Re-apply your filters. Price, condition and delivery method can reset when you start a new search. The filters guide explains each one.
  3. Sort by Date listed, newest first. It takes Facebook’s ranking out of the picture. The newest-first guide shows where the setting lives on each device.
  4. Search inside a category. Open Vehicles, Furniture or Electronics first, then search, so unrelated categories drop out.
  5. Try other words. See the search tips below.

In the Facebook app

  1. Update the app from the App Store or Google Play.
  2. Close it fully and reopen it.
  3. Clear the cache. On Android: Settings, Apps, Facebook, Storage, Clear cache. On iPhone: offload the app (Settings, General, iPhone Storage, Facebook, Offload App), then reinstall it. You stay signed in on most phones, but have your password handy.
  4. Reinstall if the search box or the Filters button still misbehaves.

On a computer

  1. Hard refresh with Ctrl Shift R (Windows) or Cmd Shift R (Mac).
  2. Try a private window. If search works there, an extension or stored data is the cause.
  3. Turn extensions off one at a time, ad blockers first, and reload after each.
  4. Log out and back in, or try a different browser.

Phone browsers are the weak spot. Marketplace in Safari or Chrome on a phone is missing the sort control and most filters, so if you are searching there, switch to the app or a computer before you try anything else.

Marketplace not showing at all

If there is no Marketplace for you, rather than a bad search, the reasons are different:

  • It isn’t available to everyone. Meta’s help centre says Marketplace access depends on things like your country and meeting the adult age requirements where you live.
  • Your access was limited or suspended. Meta can restrict Marketplace if an account breaks its Commerce Policies. You usually get a warning that access is “at risk” first, and you can ask for a review.
  • The shortcut is hidden. In the app, Marketplace may be missing from the bar at the bottom or top. Open the menu (your profile picture or the three lines) and tap Marketplace, or go straight to facebook.com/marketplace on a computer.

Why Marketplace keeps refreshing or jumping to the top

Marketplace loads results as you scroll, and the list lives only as long as the page does. Open a listing, come back, and the page often rebuilds the list. You land at the top again, sometimes with the order reshuffled, and the couch you were about to look at has moved.

On a computer the fix is simple: open listings in a new tab. Ctrl-click (Windows) or Cmd-click (Mac), or click with the mouse wheel. The results page never reloads, so you keep your place. Close each tab when you are done with it.

In the app, save anything you might want instead of tapping back and forth, then work through your Saved list. A narrower search, with a tighter radius and a price range, also means there is less to scroll and less to lose.

Search tips that find more

The listings you want are often there, just not under the word you typed.

  • Use every name for the thing. Sofa, couch, sectional, loveseat. Dresser, chest of drawers, bureau. Bike, bicycle, road bike, and the brand.
  • Search the misspellings. Sellers type fast. “Le Cruset”, “Lulu lemon”, “De Walt”. Fewer buyers find these listings, which is why they sometimes sell cheaply.
  • Start broad, then narrow. One or two words first, then filters, rather than a long phrase that matches nothing.
  • Search the category, not the whole site. “Seat” inside Vehicles skips the chairs and stools; “table” inside Furniture skips the table saws.
  • Check Kijiji too if you are in Canada. The same search often turns up different sellers.

There are more of these, by category, in the guide to finding deals on Facebook Marketplace.

Make search behave on a computer

Some of this can’t be fixed from Facebook’s side, because the loose matching and the mixed-in listings are how Marketplace is designed. On a computer, Sift, a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji, changes what the results page shows you:

  • Newest first on every search, so Facebook’s ranking never creeps back in.
  • Required words. Write +dresser and Sift keeps only listings that actually mention dressers, which answers loose matching directly.
  • Blocked words for the near misses: wanted posts, parts, “message for price”. More on that in how to exclude words from a Marketplace search.
  • The clutter out of the way: sponsored and shipped listings, sold items, listings you’ve already opened, anything beyond a radius measured from your home.

Hidden listings leave the grid, and a pill shows what went and why, so you can always check. Sift works in Chrome, Edge and Brave on a computer, not in the app. See all of Sift’s filters.

Questions people ask

Why is Facebook Marketplace search so bad?

It isn’t built to match your words exactly. Marketplace matches loosely, pads thin results with related items, slots in sponsored and shipped listings, and ranks everything by a score that includes what you’ve clicked before. Distance is a straight line from your Marketplace location, not a drive from your home.

Why does Facebook Marketplace not show what I search for?

Your words are one signal among many, so close matches and suggestions can outrank the exact thing. Try the other names people use for it (sofa and couch, dresser and chest of drawers), common misspellings, the right category, and Sort by Date listed so Facebook’s ranking stops reshuffling the page.

Why is Facebook Marketplace not showing local listings?

Your Marketplace location may be wrong, or shipped and sponsored listings are crowding the page. Check the location and radius at the top of Marketplace, then set Delivery method to Local pickup so only things you can collect remain.

Why does Facebook Marketplace keep refreshing?

Results load as you scroll, and coming back from a listing often reloads them, which puts you back at the top. On a computer, open listings in a new tab with Ctrl-click or Cmd-click so the results page never reloads. In the app, save listings you like instead of going back and forth.

Is Facebook Marketplace down?

Check a crowd-report site such as Downdetector and try Marketplace on another device or network. Lots of fresh reports and the same blank page everywhere means an outage; if it works on your phone but not your computer, the problem is local and the fixes on this page apply.
