How to exclude words from a Facebook Marketplace search

Quick answer

Facebook Marketplace has no exclude filter, and Facebook documents no search operators, so you can’t rely on a minus sign or quotes to remove words. What helps: more specific search terms, searching inside a category, and a minimum price that drops $1 placeholders. On a computer, Sift, a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji, hides any listing that mentions a word you block.

Does the minus sign work on Facebook Marketplace?

Not in any way you can count on. Facebook’s help centre doesn’t document a minus sign, quotes, or any other search operator for Marketplace. Some search-tip guides, such as Swoopa’s, say that “sofa -leather” removes leather sofas; others say the minus sign does nothing. Both can be partly right, because of how Marketplace builds a results page:

  • It matches loosely, so a listing can turn up for a related word even when your excluded word is in it.
  • It pads thin results with suggested listings that don’t follow your search text at all.
  • Sponsored and “Ships to you” listings are slotted in regardless of what you typed.

So even if the minus sign is read, the word you excluded can come straight back. You can check how it behaves on your own account in about thirty seconds:

A 30-second test for the minus sign and quotes
SearchWhat a working operator would doWhat tells you it isn’t working
dresserNothing; this is your baselineCount the wanted, parts and IKEA listings in the first 20
dresser -ikeaRemove every listing that mentions IKEAAn IKEA dresser anywhere in the first 20
dresser -wantedRemove wanted posts“Wanted: dresser” or “ISO dresser” still there
“oak dresser”Only listings with that exact phrasePine dressers, white dressers, oak nightstands

Whatever you find, treat the minus sign as a nudge, not a filter.

Native workarounds that help

None of these exclude a word outright, but together they cut most of the noise:

  1. Search for what you want, more precisely. “Solid wood dresser” or “6 drawer dresser” brings back fewer near misses than “dresser”. Add the brand, the size or the material.
  2. Search inside a category. Open Furniture first, then search. Listings filed elsewhere, including a lot of wanted posts and services, drop out.
  3. Set a minimum price. Bait listings sit at $0, $1 or $5. If you would never find a decent dresser under $40, set the minimum to $40. For cars and electronics, a sensible maximum also clears $1,234 and $12,345 placeholders.
  4. Choose Local pickup. Under Delivery method, Local pickup removes shipped stock, which is where most dropshipped listings live.
  5. Hide the worst offenders. Hide a listing from its ••• menu; Meta says that also makes similar listings less likely to show. For a reseller who floods your searches, block them from their profile.

These work on the app and on a computer. The filters guide explains where each setting lives, and why some of them reset between searches.

Block-word lists that work

If you use a filter extension that blocks words (Sift is one; there are others), these lists are a starting point. Each targets one kind of listing. Copy the words, then trim anything that hides listings you want.

Ready-to-copy block-word lists
ProblemWords to blockWatch out for
Parts and brokenbroken, "for parts", "parts only", "as is", "not working", "doesn't work", "needs repair", "no power", cracked, damaged, "pour pièces"“Cracked” also hides “never cracked” screens
Wanted postswanted, ISO, WTB, "looking for", "in search of", "want to buy", "will pay", seeking, recherche, "à la recherche"“Will pay” hides “will pay delivery” offers too
Message for price"message for price", "PM for price", "DM for price", "inbox for price", "contact for price", "price on request", "ask for price", "text for price", "prix sur demande"Pair it with a minimum price for the $1 listings
Rentals in goods searches"for rent", rental, rent, lease, "per month", "per night", "per day", "à louer"Leave it off when you are looking for a rental
Dealers and financingfinanc*, OAC, "we finance", "bad credit", "no credit", dealership, "stock #", "plus tax", "+ HST", "bi-weekly", "trade-ins welcome"Some private sellers write “plus tax” on business items
Dropshippers"free shipping", dropship*, wholesale, "factory direct", "multiple available", "in stock", "order now", "bulk"“In stock” is also common in dealer car ads

The star (financ*) is Sift’s way of matching every ending; other tools may write it differently. Sift’s own starter packs cover the same six problems in English and French, so you can switch on a shorter list with one click and add the rest yourself.

How Sift matches words

Sift is a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji. On a computer, in Chrome, Edge or Brave, it reads each listing’s title and text as the page loads and hides the ones that mention a word you block, or miss a word you require. The rules are built so that blocking a word does what you meant:

How Sift reads your words
RuleYou typeHidesDoesn’t hide
Whole words onlyart“Art print, framed”“Shopping cart”, “smart TV”
Phrases in quotes"for parts"“Selling for parts”“Parts included”, “for sale”
A star for endingsfinanc*Financing, financed, finance“Final sale”
Accents ignoredpieces“Pièces”, “pieces”“Centrepiece”
Required word+carbonEvery listing that doesn’t say carbonListings that do

Required words come in two flavours: keep listings that mention any of your words, or only those that mention all of them. A word written with + in front is always required.

Example 1: a dresser without the noise

You search “dresser” in Toronto. You switch on the wanted and parts packs and block “message for price”. As the page loads, “ISO dresser for nursery”, “IKEA Malm, missing a drawer, for parts” and “Dresser $1 message for price” leave the grid. “Solid oak dresser, 6 drawers” stays. The pill at the bottom says how many went, and peek shows each one with its reason, such as “Blocked word: for parts” or “Wanted post”, in case one was worth a look.

Example 2: a bike that must be carbon

You search “road bike” and add +carbon as a required word. Aluminium frames and anything else that never mentions carbon drop out. Add kids and bmx to your blocked words for good measure. Save the setup as a preset called “Bike hunt”, and next time it is one click from the popup.

Sift also has switches that don’t need any words: wanted posts, dealers, and free or placeholder prices ($1, $123, $1234). Cars get a few more, covered in Sift’s car filters. The whole list is on the filters page.

Kijiji

Kijiji doesn’t document a way to exclude words either, but its filters handle two of the lists above without any help: you can show Offering ads only, which removes wanted ads, and filter by owner or dealer. Kijiji’s Best Match sort, available on keyword searches, weighs your words against the title, description, category and how recent the ad is, so a precise search helps there too.

Sift’s blocked words, required words and starter packs work on Kijiji the same way, and it also hides Kijiji’s “Please Contact” prices. See Sift for Kijiji. For more ways to find the listings worth having, the deals guide has search terms and misspellings by category.

Questions people ask

Can you exclude words on Facebook Marketplace?

Not reliably. Marketplace has no exclude box, and Facebook doesn’t document a minus sign or any other search operator. Some people report that a minus sign helps; loose matching and suggested listings mean unwanted words come back anyway. Use specific terms and category pages, or block words with Sift on a computer.

How do I stop seeing wanted posts on Facebook Marketplace?

Facebook has no filter for them, so you can only hide them one at a time from the listing’s menu. On a computer, Sift hides wanted posts (titles starting with Wanted, ISO, WTB or Looking for) with one switch. On Kijiji, the Offering filter removes wanted ads natively.

How do I filter out “message for price” listings?

Set a minimum price above the placeholders people use, such as $1 or $5, so most bait listings drop out. On a computer, Sift can block the phrase “message for price” and its cousins, hide placeholder prices like $1, $123 and $1234, and show only genuinely free listings in the Free category.

Does Facebook Marketplace search use quotes?

Facebook doesn’t say it does, and you shouldn’t count on it. Results are matched loosely and padded with related listings, so a search in quotes can still return listings without your exact phrase. Run the short test on this page on your own account to see how it behaves for you.

Can I block a seller on Facebook Marketplace?

Yes. Open the seller’s profile from a listing and use the menu there to block them, which stops you seeing their listings and messages. It is one seller at a time, so it suits a persistent reseller rather than a whole type of listing.
