Will a used modular wardrobe fit and reassemble in your room?
Quick answer
Check the exact frame generation, module dimensions, doors and interior fittings as one system. Measure the room, assembly clearance and collection route before agreeing to buy. Inspect altered panels and fixing points, identify every missing part and follow the correct anchoring instructions. A pile of matching-looking panels is not yet a complete wardrobe.
Measure three spaces, not one empty wall
A wardrobe must fit its finished location, the space needed to assemble it and the route from the seller to that room. Record wall width at more than one height, the lowest ceiling point, skirting, sockets, radiator positions and floor irregularities. Then record door swing or sliding-door access in front of the planned modules.
Assembly clearance can exceed the finished height. IKEA’s PAX clearance guidance distinguishes frame dimensions, door type and assembly method. Those regional examples explain the issue; use the manual for the exact generation being sold. Do not buy an older frame using only a newer system’s simplified assembly claim.
Measure the longest panel, largest door and any section that will remain assembled. Include stair turns and vehicle loading space. The furniture fit checker can compare selected dimensions and clearance, but it cannot guarantee a turn through a stairwell or prove that disassembly is permitted.
Give every module an identity
Ask for photos while the wardrobe is still assembled, if possible. Number each frame from left to right, and use those numbers for doors, drawers, shelves and hardware bags. Obtain article labels, original instructions and approximate purchase generation. “PAX style” does not establish that IKEA parts fit it.
| Field | What to write down |
|---|---|
| Identity | Maker, system, article/model and generation |
| Dimensions | Actual width, height and depth, including alterations |
| Exterior | Side panels, top, bottom, back and required joining parts |
| Doors | Door type, size, hinge/track version, stops and soft-close parts |
| Interior | Shelf sizes, rails, drawers, runners and support pieces |
| Attachment | Required frame and wall-attachment hardware from its instructions |
| Condition | Damaged fixing holes, swollen edges, cuts or repairs |
A current Canadian PAX combination lists its frames and interior components separately. That is the useful inventory approach. It does not establish that every used frame, sliding-door rail and drawer across generations can be mixed.
Inspect connections before the doors hide them
Look at bottom edges, back panels, hinge positions and the areas around cams, dowels or other fixings. Ask specifically whether the unit has been cut down, screwed through, glued, repeatedly moved or modified around skirting. A trimmed panel may no longer match its original dimensions or reassembly instructions.
Operate doors and drawers normally while the unit is safely installed. Note rubbing, sagging, incomplete closing and runner behavior. Then establish whether the cause is an ordinary documented adjustment, a missing matched component or damaged material. Do not assume a new hinge cures a torn-out mounting point.
Ask to see the wall-attachment arrangement without removing it prematurely. The cited PAX instructions require wall attachment and appropriate fixings for the wall, with professional advice if uncertain. Budget for the correct installation in your home; a stable-looking unanchored wardrobe is not a passed safety check.
Agree on dismantling and responsibility
Confirm who will dismantle, which parts will remain assembled, what access is available and when you can inspect the pieces. Do not assume permission to remove a seller’s wall fixtures or cut panels. If they dismantle before you arrive, request labeled photos and a part count, then inspect the actual pieces before accepting them.
Bag hardware by module and function. Keep the instruction part numbers with each bag. Tape labels to protective wrapping rather than a delicate finish. A mixed bag of screws may look generous while omitting the proprietary connectors you need.
If a panel or safety-related fitting is missing, confirm the correct supported replacement before offering. A generic bolt of similar size is not automatically an approved substitute. If a discontinued door track cannot be obtained, compare the value of the configuration you can actually rebuild, not the original photograph.
Compare two complete room solutions
Here is a hypothetical example. A three-module wardrobe is $200, but confirmed replacement runners cost $60, transport $90 and assembly/anchoring assistance $140: $490. Another complete set is $350 with $60 transport and $80 installation assistance: also $490. These are illustrative costs, not local quotes.
The first set is not cheaper after completion. If one frame is too tall for the verified assembly method, it is not a usable alternative at either price. Remove incompatible items from the comparison rather than hoping an unplanned modification will make them fit.
Use the cost calculator for known parts, transport and installation. Include storage if the seller needs the wardrobe removed before your room is ready. Do not count a surplus door as a guaranteed resale credit.
Ask for the evidence in one message
“Could you send the article labels, assembled front and interior photos, and actual dimensions of each frame? Have any panels been cut, glued or repaired? Please list the doors, tracks/hinges, drawers and wall-attachment pieces included. I need to verify ceiling and assembly clearance before agreeing to collection.”
Buy once the room plan, supported parts and reassembly arrangements work. Negotiate a confirmed replaceable drawer part or cosmetic mark. Pause for damaged structural fixing points or unclear anchoring, and pass if the exact system cannot fit. The broader used-furniture guide covers upholstery and other furniture; this purchase is decided module by module.
