Facebook Marketplace vs eBay: where should you buy?

Disclosure We make Sift, a browser extension for Facebook Marketplace. It doesn’t run on eBay, neither Facebook nor eBay pays us, and this page doesn’t rank Sift.

Quick answer

Buy on Facebook Marketplace when you can collect the item and check it before you pay: furniture, appliances, bikes and anything bulky usually cost less there, with nothing to ship. Buy on eBay for rare or specific items and anything that has to be posted, because eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers you when you pay through eBay. Local Marketplace deals carry no buyer protection at all.

Where Facebook Marketplace wins

You see the thing before you pay. That one fact is why Marketplace beats eBay for most second-hand goods you can collect. You can sit on the sofa, ride the bike or plug in the TV. On eBay you trust photos, and the guarantee only helps after something goes wrong.

Bulky items are where the gap is widest. A dresser, a treadmill or a lawn mower can cost more to ship than it is worth, so on eBay it is either collection only or priced with freight on top. On Marketplace the seller usually wants it gone by Saturday. That is why used furniture, appliances and exercise equipment so often sell for less there.

Haggling is normal, too. A Marketplace price is an opening position, and a fair offer from someone who can collect today often lands; our guide to negotiating on Marketplace has wording that works. eBay has Best Offer, but that seller can see exactly what the item sold for last week.

The trade-off is protection. Meta’s Purchase Protection excludes local pickups and deals arranged in Messenger, so once you pay cash or send a transfer for something you collected, there is nobody to claim from. See whether Marketplace is safe for the habits that matter.

Where eBay wins

Selection comes first. A local search shows what people within driving distance happen to be selling this week. eBay shows the whole country and often the world, which matters when you need one model number, a replacement part or a particular card.

Then there is protection that pays out. eBay’s Money Back Guarantee refunds you when an item doesn’t arrive, arrives faulty or damaged, doesn’t match the listing, or the seller won’t honour their own return policy, as long as you paid through eBay checkout with an eligible method. You generally have 30 days from delivery to report a problem, or longer if the seller’s return window is. Trading cards are stricter: from a seller who doesn’t take returns, you get 3 days.

Some categories are checked before they reach you. eBay’s Authenticity Guarantee sends eligible sneakers, watches, handbags and trading cards above set prices to independent authenticators (PSA inspects the cards), and the listing carries a badge. On Marketplace, telling real from fake is on you: see our guides to fake sneakers and fake designer bags.

And there are auctions and public sold prices. A late-night auction can finish well under market, and finished sales stay searchable, which makes eBay the best price reference there is. Against all that: shipping costs, a wait of days and no chance to test before paying.

The eBay listings inside Facebook Marketplace

Meta began testing eBay listings on Marketplace in January 2025 in the US, Germany and France, two months after the European Commission fined it €797 million over how it tied Marketplace to Facebook. In November 2025 Meta said partner listings from eBay and Poshmark now appear throughout the feed.

You can spot one by the partner icon on the listing photo, and on Facebook’s desktop site some cards also say “Partner listing”. eBay says only its listings with shipping options are shown, so none offer pickup, and buying one sends you to eBay to check out, signed in or as a guest. They aren’t sponsored ads, just ordinary eBay listings shown through a partnership.

That checkout step decides who protects you. It is an eBay order, so eBay’s Money Back Guarantee covers it, and Facebook’s Purchase Protection doesn’t, because it excludes purchases made through third-party sites. Keep the payment on eBay: the guarantee excludes any item paid even partly outside eBay, so a seller offering a discount for Zelle, a bank transfer or PayPal friends and family is asking you to give up your cover. See shipping scams for how that pitch goes.

There is no switch to turn partner listings off. Because they always ship, setting Delivery method to Local pickup removes most of them; our guide to hiding sponsored and eBay listings has the steps, and local only explains why the filter resets. On a computer, Sift hides them on every search, as shown below.

eBay’s own local pickup sits in between: pay through eBay before you collect and it stays an eBay order, but cash at the door makes it a private deal the guarantee doesn’t cover. Our Marketplace buyer protection guide explains how to claim, and what to do if you paid some other way.

Fees for buyers

On a local Marketplace deal, the price you agree is the price you pay. eBay depends on the site:

  • In the US, eBay.com adds no buyer fee. You pay the item, shipping and sales tax where it applies.
  • In the UK, items from UK private sellers carry a Buyer Protection fee of £0.10 per item, plus 7% of the first £20, 4% of the part from £20 to £300 and 2% from £300 to £4,000. On a £100 item, that is £4.70. Business sellers, private sellers outside the UK, vehicles, classified ads and property are exempt.
  • In Australia, a similar fee started on 12 May 2026 for items from Australian sellers without an eBay Pro plan (AU$0.30 plus 8%, 6% and 4% on rising bands), already included in the price you see.

For UK and Australian buyers, that fee is one more reason a local deal often comes out ahead. Our guides to Marketplace in the UK and in Australia cover the other local differences.

Using eBay to price a Marketplace deal

eBay’s most useful feature for a Marketplace buyer has nothing to do with buying on eBay. Its sold listings show what an item actually went for, and Marketplace keeps no such record once a listing is gone (see finding sold items on Marketplace).

  1. Search your own country’s eBay for the exact model (ebay.com, ebay.ca, ebay.co.uk or ebay.com.au), so prices are in your currency.
  2. Turn on Sold items in the filters, in the left column on a computer or under Filter in the app.
  3. Match the condition. Used with used, boxed with boxed, and the same charger, case or accessories included.
  4. Leave out the shipping. Compare with the eBay item price alone; you pay no postage on a local deal.
  5. Take the middle of three to five recent sales, ignoring the one that went oddly high or suspiciously low.

A local price at or a little under that figure is fair. Far under it, on something easy to resell, is a reason for questions: cheap phones, consoles and graded cards are the classic bait. Our fair price guide goes further, and card buyers should read Pokémon card prices and buying graded slabs.

Which to use for what

  • Furniture, mattresses, appliances and gym equipment belong on Marketplace. Shipping prices eBay out, and you want to see them first.
  • Bikes are local too. Ride before you pay, and check the serial number.
  • For trading cards, LEGO minifigures and rare parts, eBay has the selection and the sold prices. Use them to judge local deals.
  • Phones, laptops and consoles work on either. Locally, check the IMEI and that the phone isn’t locked to its owner.
  • Sneakers and designer bags above eBay’s authentication thresholds are safer bought on eBay.
  • Cars are a local purchase, and neither site’s guarantee covers them. Our used car guide has the checks.

Shopping Marketplace with eBay prices, using Sift

Sift is a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace. It doesn’t run on eBay, but it makes Marketplace easier to judge against it. There is no account to make, it works right in Chrome (and Edge and Brave) on a computer, and setup takes about a minute.

Switch on hiding shipped and partner listings in Sift, and every listing marked “Ships to you” or sold through a partner such as eBay leaves the grid as the page loads, on every search.

Sift hiding shipped and partner listings on a Toronto sofa search: the four “Ships to you” listings go, and the four local ones stay, each with its distance.

Every listing is one click from its sold prices on your country’s eBay, with the sold filter already on. Sift also compares each price with similar listings. Cheap ones get a Below typical badge, overpriced ones get Above typical, and a price far below similar listings gets a red Very low price flag. It marks price drops too, with the listing’s price history.

A PSA 10 Charizard at $420 on a Markham search. Sift’s details card places it below the typical range for similar listings and links to PriceCharting, TCGplayer and eBay sold prices.

When a seller will only ship something people normally collect or inspect in person, like furniture or a bike, Sift flags it with a Ships only warning. It runs on a computer only, not in the Facebook app or a phone’s browser. See everything Sift can filter and its price tracker.

Questions people ask

Is it safer to buy on eBay or Facebook Marketplace?

For anything shipped, eBay is safer, as long as you pay through eBay checkout. Its Money Back Guarantee refunds items that never arrive or don’t match the listing. A local Marketplace deal has no buyer protection, but you see the item before you pay, which prevents most problems. The risky case is a Marketplace seller who wants paying first for something they will post.

Why are there eBay listings on Facebook Marketplace?

Meta began testing eBay listings on Marketplace in January 2025 in the US, Germany and France, after the European Commission fined Meta €797 million over how it tied Marketplace to Facebook. Only eBay listings that ship are shown, marked with a partner icon on the photo, and buying one sends you to eBay to pay. Poshmark listings now appear too.

If I buy an eBay item on Facebook Marketplace, who protects me?

eBay does. You check out on eBay, so it is an eBay order covered by eBay’s Money Back Guarantee. Facebook’s Purchase Protection doesn’t apply, because it excludes purchases made through third-party sites. Report problems to eBay, generally within 30 days of delivery. If anyone suggests paying them directly, say no: anything paid even partly outside eBay loses the guarantee.

How do I get rid of eBay listings on Facebook Marketplace?

Facebook has no setting that turns them off. Because eBay listings always ship, setting Delivery method to Local pickup in Marketplace’s filters removes most of them, though it may reset on a new search. On a computer, the Sift extension hides shipped and partner listings, eBay’s included, on every search.

Is Facebook Marketplace cheaper than eBay?

Often, for bulky and everyday things. A local seller has nothing to ship and usually just wants the item gone, so furniture, appliances and bikes tend to sell for less than on eBay. For collectibles, trading cards and parts, local prices sit close to eBay’s sold prices, because sellers check them before listing.

Does eBay charge buyers fees?

Not on eBay.com in the US, where you pay the item, shipping and any sales tax. In the UK, items from UK private sellers carry a Buyer Protection fee of £0.10 plus 7% of the first £20, 4% of the part up to £300 and 2% up to £4,000. eBay Australia added a similar fee in May 2026.
