Buying used at online auctions: set a complete bid limit
Quick answer
Read the exact lot and sale terms before bidding. Confirm what is included, whether inspection is possible, all fees and taxes, and the fixed collection arrangements. Work backwards from your complete budget to a maximum bid. If you cannot collect or accept the unresolved condition, do not bid.
An auction bid is a different commitment
A classifieds enquiry usually starts a conversation. An auction bid can create a commitment before you have seen the item. Read the operator’s terms and any auction-specific additions before treating bidding as a way to reserve something for later inspection.
For example, Maxsold’s current buyer terms describe bids as irrevocable offers, an 18% buyer’s premium, and buyer responsibility for collection. They also contain detailed refund conditions and exceptions. These are that operator’s terms, checked for this guide; they are not universal auction rules. Review the terms shown for the actual auction before each bid, particularly if another auction format has different conditions.
Save the lot number, exact description, included quantities, stated condition and collection window. A room photograph can contain objects outside the lot. If a description and photograph appear inconsistent, ask through the operator’s permitted question route and resolve the scope before bidding.
Eliminate impossible collections first
Read the pickup date, location information, time allocation, access and required documents before calculating a bid. A low winning price cannot fix a collection you are unable to attend.
Ask who supplies packing, carrying help and any approved disassembly. Maxsold’s pickup guidance tells buyers to bring packaging and necessary help; staff are not there to carry purchases. Its FAQ and full terms describe identification requirements differently, so confirm the current instructions for your invoice and any representative collecting for you rather than relying on a threshold from a general FAQ.
A hypothetical cabinet lot has a Saturday 10 a.m.–noon collection window. Your booked vehicle is not available until 1 p.m. Unless the operator confirms an acceptable arrangement under its terms before bidding, pass. Do not win first and ask the household to keep the cabinet another week.
Work backwards from the complete budget
The following is hypothetical arithmetic, not a tax assessment or a current auction quote. Assume a $400 total limit, $70 collection, $20 packing and a $30 reserve. That leaves $280 for the bid, premium and tax.
For this example only, the premium is 18% of the winning bid and a hypothetical 13% tax applies to the bid plus premium. Confirm both the real rate and taxable base for an actual sale.
| Step | Calculation | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Available for invoice | 400 − 70 − 20 − 30 | $280.00 |
| Invoice multiplier | 1.18 × 1.13 | 1.3334 |
| Mathematical bid ceiling | 280 ÷ 1.3334 | About $209.99 |
| Chosen cap below ceiling | Buyer allows rounding room | $209.00 |
| Premium at that cap | 209 × 18% | $37.62 |
| Example tax | 246.62 × 13%, rounded | $32.06 |
| Invoice plus travel and packing | 278.68 + 70 + 20 | $368.68 |
| Budget remaining | 400 − 368.68 | $31.32 |
If permitted bid increments would push the next bid to $210, stop under this chosen cap. The purpose of a cap is to survive the final minutes, not become an opening point for another calculation each time someone outbids you.
If taxes apply differently, a fixed handling charge exists, or several lots share a delivery, rebuild the calculation. The used buying cost calculator can hold the resulting item price, transport, parts and other purchase costs, but it does not calculate an auction premium or tax rule from a bid. Enter those amounts only after establishing them.
Price only the usable lot
Suppose a lot contains six dining chairs and you need four. Two show damage and cannot be assessed further before bidding. Do not divide the invoice by six and call that your usable unit cost. Base the decision on four acceptable chairs, with handling of the other two included and no resale assumed.
An “untested” appliance is not equivalent to a tested appliance with a cosmetic defect. Ask whether the relevant function can be checked at a preview, or whether a qualified inspection is available and permitted. If the remaining uncertainty exceeds what you can afford, pass instead of assigning a token repair allowance.
For specialist items, use the independent-inspection workflow. For a mixed lot, use the bundle guide. Neither changes the auction’s actual inspection or return terms.
Prepare for winning before the auction closes
Confirm payment method, invoice timing, collection instructions and a usable contact route. Keep your maximum total commitments visible across multiple lots. Two bids that look affordable separately may both win.
If you need only one of two similar desks, decide whether you can accept winning both before bidding on both. Do not assume the second seller will release you because another auction finished first. Automatic bidding limits are still commitments within the operator’s rules.
At collection, compare the lot and included parts with your record and raise discrepancies through the stated process before removal. Bring the agreed help and packing; leave enough time for the permitted inspection. If a problem occurs, preserve the evidence and follow the actual dispute instructions rather than assuming ordinary retail returns apply.
Know when losing is the successful outcome
A bid that exceeds your complete limit buys a different proposition from the one you evaluated. Letting it go preserves the ability to buy another suitable item. The same applies to an unanswered condition question, an inaccessible pickup or a lot that contains too much unwanted material.
Sift can help you compare alternatives while browsing supported desktop Marketplace and Kijiji pages. Auction bidding, alerts, payments and collection remain with the auction operator; use its own controls and terms for those actions.
