Can you search all of Facebook Marketplace? What actually works
Quick answer
No. Facebook Marketplace always searches around one location, up to 500 miles (about 805 km), and has no nationwide setting. The closest built-in option, in the US, is setting Delivery method to Shipping, which shows sellers across the continental US who will post the item. For things you collect, search from a few hub cities in turn, or bookmark one search per city.
| Method | What it covers | Effort | Pickup items? | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shipping filter (US) | Sellers across the continental US who will post the item | One filter | No, shipped items only | Low, if you pay through checkout |
| 500-mile radius from hub cities | 12 searches for the lower 48; 6 or 7 for Canada’s populated south | One search per hub, by hand | Yes | Low; the cost is the drive |
| One bookmark per city | Any city you choose | A few minutes to set up, then one click | Yes | Low |
| Buy-and-sell groups | National groups for one hobby, model or trade | Join, then wait for approval | Often | Higher: deals happen in Messenger |
| Multi-city search tools | Many regions in one go | Low to medium | Yes | Varies: logins, tab floods, Meta’s terms |
| Kijiji, all of Canada | Every province in one search | One link | Yes | Low; Canada only |
| A Google site: search | Whatever Google happened to crawl | Low | Rarely useful | Stale results, no filters |
Why there’s no nationwide search
Marketplace is built around a place. Meta’s explainer on how Marketplace ranks listings says you set the location or radius where you want to search for local listings in your country, and every search, on the website or in the app, starts from that one point. Change the city and you move the circle. You can’t add a second one, and Meta’s wording, a location in your country, means you shouldn’t plan on searching across the border either.
The circle has a hard edge. The largest radius in the menu is 500 miles, about 805 km. CarSnipe, which writes about Marketplace for car buyers, notes that Facebook turns a ZIP code into a city-level point, so the centre of your circle is the middle of your town, not your front door. From Chicago, 500 miles reaches Minneapolis, Kansas City and Pittsburgh. It doesn’t reach Denver or New York.
A big circle isn’t an even one, either. Unless you change Sort by, Marketplace uses its Suggested order, which Meta says shows first the listings it predicts you’ll value most, with location among the signals. So a 500-mile search still leans local at the top of the page. Set Sort by to Date listed: Newest first and the far edge of the circle competes on the same terms as your own street, ordered by when each item was posted. Our guide to searching Facebook Marketplace covers the rest of the filters.
Method 1: the Shipping filter
If the thing you want fits in a box, this is the closest Facebook gets to a national search. Meta’s shipping help page says buyers can purchase from sellers across the continental United States, not only from people nearby. A shipped listing has no pickup spot to measure, so your radius doesn’t hold it back.
On a computer:
- Search for the item at facebook.com/marketplace.
- Under Delivery method in the left column, choose Shipping.
- Set Sort by to Date listed: Newest first, and add a price range if you have one in mind.
- Buy through checkout on the listing itself, not by agreeing a payment in Messenger.
In the Facebook app, search, tap Filters, set Delivery method to Shipping and apply.
What you get is every seller who offers shipping on that item, wherever they are in the lower 48. What you don’t get is everything else. Furniture, appliances, cars and anything awkward to post will almost never show up, because their sellers want you to collect. Part of what you see may not be Facebook’s at all: since 2025, eBay listings have appeared on Marketplace in the US, and eBay says only its listings that ship are shown there, with checkout on eBay under eBay’s rules.
Staying inside Facebook’s checkout buys you protection. Meta says Purchase Protection covers eligible checkout orders that never arrive, or arrive damaged or different from the listing. It doesn’t cover deals arranged in Messenger or paid another way. Our guide to listings that ship to you explains how shipped listings work, and shipping scams covers the sellers who try to pull you out of checkout.
Meta’s help page describes shipping for the continental US. Outside it, Canada included, don’t count on this method.
Method 2: the widest radius, from hub cities
For a truck, a sectional or a pallet of tiles you’ll collect yourself, the only way to cover the map is to move the circle. Set the largest radius and search from a few well-spaced cities, one after another.
- Click your location in the left column of Marketplace.
- Type the hub city and pick it from the list.
- Open the radius menu, choose the largest option (500 miles) and click Apply.
- Run your search sorted by Date listed: Newest first, and note anything worth a closer look.
- Move to the next hub and repeat.
In the app, tap the location near the top of Marketplace, enter the city, set the radius and tap Apply. Our guide to changing your Marketplace location covers every device. When you’re done, set your own location back, or local searches will open 500 miles away.
We worked out the hubs below by measuring straight-line distances from each city. Every major metro and corner of the lower 48 we checked sits within about 480 miles of one of them, so the circles overlap with room to spare.
| Hub | Reaches, roughly |
|---|---|
| Seattle | Washington, most of Oregon, northern Idaho, Boise |
| San Francisco | Northern and central California, southern Oregon, Reno, northern Nevada |
| Los Angeles | Southern California, Las Vegas, southern Utah |
| Billings | Montana, northern Wyoming, the western Dakotas |
| Denver | Colorado, Wyoming, Salt Lake City, western Nebraska and Kansas |
| Albuquerque | New Mexico, Phoenix, Tucson, Flagstaff, El Paso, the Texas Panhandle |
| Dallas | Most of Texas down to Brownsville, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Wichita |
| Minneapolis | Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, the eastern Dakotas, Omaha, Kansas City |
| Chicago | Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, St. Louis, Pittsburgh |
| Atlanta | Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, New Orleans |
| Orlando | Florida, Miami and the Keys |
| Boston | New England, New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Washington DC |
Canada needs fewer hubs because most people live in a band near the US border. At 805 km, six cities cover it:
| Hub | Reaches, roughly |
|---|---|
| Vancouver | The Lower Mainland, Vancouver Island, the Okanagan, Kamloops, Prince George |
| Calgary | Alberta, Edmonton, Fort McMurray, Grande Prairie, Saskatoon, the Kootenays |
| Winnipeg | Manitoba, Regina, Thunder Bay |
| Toronto | Southern Ontario, Windsor, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins |
| Montreal | Southern Quebec, Ottawa, Quebec City, Saguenay |
| Halifax | Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI, the Gaspé |
St. John’s is about 900 km from Halifax, so eastern Newfoundland needs a seventh search of its own. The territories sit outside every circle.
The radius is a straight line, so a seller “within 500 miles” can be a much longer drive once you add mountains, lakes or a ferry. And a search from a small hub such as Billings will be thin, because fewer people sell there.
Method 3: one bookmark per city
Retyping a city twelve times gets old. On a computer, Marketplace gives each city its own web address, and a search can live inside it:
facebook.com/marketplace/toronto/search/?query=road%20bike&sortBy=creation_time_descend
The sortBy=creation_time_descend part sorts newest first. Change toronto to another city and you have the same search there. Big cities usually use their name in lower case, run together (calgary, chicago, saltlakecity), or a short form such as nyc, la, sf or philly. Smaller places use a long number instead of a name. Facebook’s public city pages, such as the one titled “Buy and Sell in New Alexandria, Virginia”, are an example. They show listings within 40 miles by default, so widen the radius if you need to.
- Run the search once with the filters you want, newest first.
- Copy the address from the browser bar and change the city part.
- Open it to check the right place loads; the location in the left column should name it.
- Bookmark it into a folder named after the search, one bookmark per city.
- Open the whole folder when you want to check. Chrome, Edge and Brave can open every bookmark in a folder at once from its right-click menu.
You can browse a city page without logging in, but you need a Facebook account to message a seller. These city links are also what Sift can watch, as below.
Method 4: buy-and-sell groups
Groups are where specialists trade. There are national groups for one car model, for its parts, for vintage audio, film cameras, trading cards and old hand tools, and their posts reach members wherever they live. A group has no radius at all. Meta’s Marketplace help includes a section on Buy and Sell Groups that explains how they work.
To find them, search Facebook (the main search, not Marketplace) for the item plus “buy and sell” or “for sale”, then filter the results to Groups. Join two or three active ones, read the rules before you post, and if the group allows it, post what you’re looking for.
The catch is how deals close. Group sales happen in Messenger, and Meta says Messenger transactions and payments outside checkout don’t qualify for Purchase Protection. Scammers join big groups too and copy real posts. Pay in person when you can, or with a method that has its own buyer protection; our guide to Marketplace payment methods compares them.
Method 5: multi-city search tools
Third-party sites and browser extensions offer to run one search across many regions. SearchTempest is the best known. Its own title reads “Search all of Facebook Marketplace, craigslist & more”, and it says it isn’t affiliated with Facebook or craigslist. There is also an open-source nationwide search on GitHub that opens many Marketplace searches in browser tabs. It needs you logged in to Facebook with ad and pop-up blockers switched off, covers 11 countries, and was last updated in May 2024.
Weigh the trade-offs first:
- None can see past what Marketplace shows a person searching from each location. They save you the typing. The 500-mile circles are still there underneath.
- Tools that open a tab per region can load dozens of pages at once, which is slow and easy to lose track of.
- Meta’s terms say you may not access or collect data from its products by automated means without permission. Facebook can respond to heavy automated visits by asking you to log in again.
- No search tool needs your Facebook password. A site or extension that asks for it is after your account.
Our comparison of Facebook Marketplace extensions goes tool by tool, and Marketplace alternatives covers the other sites worth searching.
What about searching Google?
The old tip is to search Google for site:facebook.com/marketplace plus the item. We left it out. You only get what Google happened to crawl, with no filter for place, price or date listed and nothing to say the item sold last week. Treat any hits as a bonus.
Watch the same search in several cities
Rare things go quickly, so you also need to hear when one is posted. Facebook’s own alerts work per saved search, mostly in the phone app, and Facebook decides when they arrive; our guide to Marketplace notifications shows how to set them up.
On a computer, Sift watches your searches for you. A watched search is just a search page, and a city page counts, so you can watch the same search in several cities: Sift Pro watches 5 searches and Sift Max up to 25. Say you want a Honda Civic under $13,000: watch it in Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal. Sift checks them in the background, runs new listings through your filters, and sends an alert for the ones that pass, to your computer or, with Sift Pro, to your phone.
Siftjust now
1 new, honda civic, Toronto
$12,500, 2016 Honda Civic LX, 128,000 km
- Open the city search from your bookmarks, newest first.
- Click the Sift icon and press Watch.
- Repeat for each city you want to cover, up to 5 with Sift Pro or 25 with Sift Max.
- Pick where alerts go. Desktop notifications come with every plan, and with Sift Pro the same alerts go to your phone by Telegram, ntfy or email.

In Canada, Kijiji searches the whole country
Kijiji does what Marketplace won’t. Set its location to Canada and one search covers every province. The address follows a simple pattern, with the words joined by hyphens:
kijiji.ca/b-canada/honda-civic/k0l0?sort=dateDesc
The l0 at the end means all of Canada, and sort=dateDesc puts the newest listings first. For Canadian buyers, the strongest setup is both: Marketplace hubs for your region, Kijiji for the country. Our comparison of Facebook Marketplace and Kijiji covers where each is stronger, and Sift for Kijiji covers the Kijiji side of the extension. Switch on Kijiji in Sift, and when one click sets Sift up for a car, a bike, LEGO, trading cards or a phone, it offers a newest-first search on either site, and the Kijiji one covers all of Canada. Narrow it to your area, or watch it as it is for the whole country.
Buying from far away without getting burned
Distance changes the risk. Either you can’t see the item before money moves, or you’re spending a day and a tank of fuel on a stranger.
For anything shipped, pay only through Facebook checkout. A seller who wants Zelle, an e-Transfer, a gift card or crypto “to save fees” on an item they’ll post is running the most common shipping scam, and those payments are hard or impossible to reverse.
Never send a deposit to hold something you haven’t seen. “Lots of interest, send $100 and it’s yours” is the whole script of the deposit scam, and distance makes it tempting because you can’t just pop round.
Video-call the seller before you travel and ask to see the item live, running if it runs, with the serial number or VIN in shot. A real seller can do that in two minutes.
For cars, check the VIN before you book the trip. Sift’s VIN check does the first pass from the ad itself: it confirms the VIN matches the year, make and model and shows recalls on record for that model. In the US, the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s free VINCheck shows whether a car has been reported stolen and not recovered, or reported as salvage by a participating insurer. In Canada, our guide to a stolen car VIN check covers the options. Then arrange an inspection near the seller, take our used car inspection checklist, and read how to buy a used car on Marketplace.
When you meet, pick a public place, ideally a police station’s safe exchange zone, and pay only once you’ve seen and tested the item.
What Sift does here
Sift works inside Facebook’s one-location search. It makes each city search quicker to read, and it watches your searches and tells you when something new turns up, with Sift Pro and Sift Max covering the same search in several cities. Sift is a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace, with no account to make, and it works in Chrome, Edge and Brave on a computer.
Every city you open gets the same clean-up: sponsored listings hidden, dealers hidden or tagged, and, if you only want things to collect, every “Ships to you” listing gone. With newest first switched on in Sift, every city search opens newest first, so you don’t set Sort by in every city.
Sift’s distance limit is measured from the home you set. When you browse a city far from home, switch the limit off, or it will hide everything past your line. When you widen a search around home instead, Sift can follow the radius in the search itself in place of your usual limit.
On a listing’s details card, Check elsewhere links (Search Kijiji, Search Facebook Marketplace, Sold on eBay) show what the same thing sells for before you drive 300 km for it, and Is this a good deal? gives an AI second opinion with a fair offer before you make the trip. Red flags that matter at a distance get a red chip: Pay first when a seller wants money up front, and Ships only when a seller will only post something people normally collect, such as a sofa or a car.
Sift runs on a computer, and its alerts work in the background even with the tab closed, on your desktop or, with Sift Pro, on your phone. See everything Sift does.
Questions people ask
Can you search all of Facebook Marketplace?
No. Every Marketplace search is drawn around one location with a radius of up to 500 miles (about 805 km), and Meta describes it as searching for local listings in your country. The nearest thing to a national search is the Shipping filter in the US, which shows sellers anywhere in the continental US who will post the item to you.
How do I search Facebook Marketplace nationwide?
Combine a few methods. For anything that can be posted, set Delivery method to Shipping. For pickup items, set the radius to 500 miles and search from a handful of hub cities in turn, since twelve well-placed cities cover the lower 48. Bookmark each city’s search so it reopens in one click, and in Canada, add Kijiji’s all-of-Canada search.
What is the maximum radius on Facebook Marketplace?
500 miles, or about 805 km, the largest option in the radius menu. It is a straight-line circle drawn from a single point, and Facebook turns a ZIP or postal code into a city-level point, so the edge is approximate. A wide radius isn’t an even one either, because Marketplace still weighs distance when it ranks results in its default order.
How do I search Facebook Marketplace in other cities?
Click or tap your location in Marketplace, type the other city, choose a radius and apply. On a computer you can also open a city’s own page, such as facebook.com/marketplace/toronto/search/?query=bike, and change the city part to search somewhere else. Bookmark each one. You can browse any city in your country, but you need a Facebook account to message a seller.
Is there an app to search all of Facebook Marketplace?
Not from Facebook. Its app has the same one-location, 500-mile limit as the website. Third-party sites and extensions offer multi-city searches, and SearchTempest bills itself as a way to search all of Facebook Marketplace. With no nationwide search to plug into, such tools work location by location for you. Read what each one needs before you use it, and never give any of them your Facebook password.
Why do Facebook Marketplace nationwide tricks stop working?
They lean on things Facebook doesn’t support, such as a web address edited by hand or a menu that has since moved, and Facebook changes those without notice. Many older videos and forum tips no longer match what Marketplace shows. The open-source nationwide search tool on GitHub, for one, was last updated in May 2024. The radius, the Shipping filter and city pages are Facebook’s own features, which is why they keep working.
Is it safe to buy from a seller in another state or province?
It can be, if the money moves the right way. For a shipped item, pay only through Facebook checkout, where eligible orders have Purchase Protection, and treat a request for Zelle, an e-Transfer or a gift card as a red flag. For pickup, never pay a deposit to hold something you haven’t seen, check a car’s VIN before you travel, and pay when you meet.
