Why is my Facebook Marketplace location wrong?
Quick answer
Marketplace keeps its own location, separate from your profile, and when it can’t place you it guesses from your connection. A VPN, location permission turned off or a recent trip are the usual causes. Set it by hand with your postal or ZIP code, turn off the VPN and allow location for Facebook. On a computer, Sift, a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace, measures distance from your own home.
| What you see | Which location it is | Where to fix it |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace opens on another city or country | Your Marketplace location | In Marketplace: left column on a computer, top of the app |
| Your profile lists an old city | Your profile’s current city | Your profile, but it doesn’t steer Marketplace |
| Your own listing shows the wrong town | The listing’s location | Edit the listing and change its location |
| A seller’s listing names a town that doesn’t add up | The place the seller picked | Check the map on the listing, or ask where pickup is |
Meta says your Marketplace location can differ from your profile’s, so fixing one won’t fix the other. Prices in a foreign currency are usually the same fault. City right but listings missing? See why listings aren’t showing up.
Why Marketplace gets your location wrong
Meta doesn’t publish how Marketplace places you, or how it weighs GPS against your connection. These causes bite most, in order.
- A VPN or proxy. Your connection appears to come from the server’s city, and Marketplace believes it. Browser VPN extensions and antivirus VPNs count.
- Location permission off, or set to approximate. Facebook then guesses from your connection, or gets a rough area instead of your street.
- A network that sits elsewhere. Mobile data and many work, school and hotel networks connect through a hub a city or more away. Right on home wifi, wrong on mobile data? This is it.
- A recent trip. Marketplace can stay on the place you visited.
- A postal code that turns into a city. CarSnipe found Facebook converts a ZIP code into a city-level point, so your radius may start downtown (why that leaks).
- iCloud Private Relay in Safari. It hides your IP address from websites, and with IP Address Location on “Use country and time zone”, sites see little more than your country. Apple suggests “Maintain general location” for local content.
Fix it in this order
Check Marketplace after each step and stop when it’s right.
- Turn off the VPN, proxy or Private Relay on the device that’s wrong, then reload.
- Set the location by hand with your postal or ZIP code instead of letting Marketplace detect it. Our guide has steps for each device.
- Allow location for Facebook, with precise location on (paths below).
- Start from the Marketplace home page, not an old bookmark. An address with a city in it, like facebook.com/marketplace/toronto/search, searches that city whatever your setting says.
- Update the app, then sign out and back in.
- Clear stored data. On Android: Settings > Apps > Facebook > Storage > Clear cache. On iPhone, delete and reinstall the app. On a computer, clear site data for facebook.com.
Location permission, device by device
| Device | Path | Choose |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone and iPad | Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > Facebook | While Using the App, Precise Location on |
| Android | Settings > Apps > Facebook > Permissions > Location (labels vary by maker) | Allow only while using the app, Use precise location on |
| Chrome, Edge or Brave on a computer | On facebook.com, the icon left of the address > Site settings > Location | Allow, or Ask (not Block) |
| Safari with Private Relay | Settings (System Settings on a Mac) > your name > iCloud > Private Relay > IP Address Location | Maintain general location |
Stuck, or keeps changing back: the two-minute test
If the location jumps back, something keeps feeding Facebook the wrong place. Open Marketplace three ways and compare.
| Check | If Marketplace is right here | What to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Same device, other network (mobile data instead of wifi) | Your usual network or a VPN | Turn the VPN off, or set the location by hand on that network |
| Another device, same network | The first device | Its location permission, VPN app or cached data |
| A private window on your computer | An extension or stored site data | Turn off VPN extensions, clear site data for facebook.com |

Why does Marketplace think I’m in Paris?
It’s widely reported: Marketplace suddenly fills with Paris listings for people who have never been there. Meta hasn’t explained it, but it tends to follow a VPN, location turned off or a trip. Set the location by hand, then remove the cause. To browse another city on purpose, see searching beyond your area.
Keep your distances right on a computer
Even with the right city, Marketplace’s radius starts from a rough point that moves when Facebook’s guess does (see what near me really covers). Sift, a free browser extension for Facebook Marketplace, measures from a home you choose.
Set your home once in Sift’s settings, by typing your town or using your current location, and choose how far you’ll travel. Every card shows its distance (“12 km”), and anything past your limit is hidden, whatever Facebook thinks. Sift only hides a listing as too far when it’s sure, so nothing close slips away by mistake.
Sift can’t change which listings Facebook loads, though. If Marketplace thinks you’re in Paris, the page fills with Paris listings and Sift hides them all as too far, leaving it empty. Fix Facebook’s location first; Sift then keeps results tight. See the distance filter and local only.
Sift is free, needs no account and sets up in a minute, in Chrome, Edge and Brave on a computer (not phones).
Questions people ask
Why does Facebook Marketplace show the wrong city?
Marketplace is usually guessing from your connection. A VPN, mobile data, a work network or location permission turned off can all place you in another city. Set your Marketplace location by hand with your postal or ZIP code, turn off the VPN and let Facebook use your location.
Why does Facebook Marketplace think I’m in Paris?
Many people report sudden Paris listings, and Meta hasn’t said why. It tends to happen when Marketplace can’t place you: through a VPN, with location off or after a trip. Set the location by hand to your postal or ZIP code, then fix the VPN or permission so it doesn’t slip back.
Why won’t my Facebook Marketplace location update?
Something keeps feeding Facebook the old place. Turn off any VPN, start from the Marketplace home page rather than an old bookmark, and set the location again. Still stuck? Update the app, sign out and back in, and clear Facebook’s cache.
Does my Facebook profile location change Marketplace?
Not reliably. Meta says your Marketplace location can be different from the one on your profile, so updating your profile’s current city may not move Marketplace. Change the location inside Marketplace itself instead. Changing Marketplace doesn’t touch your profile either.
Can a VPN change my Facebook Marketplace location?
Yes, and it’s one of the most common reasons Marketplace shows the wrong place. A VPN makes your connection look like it comes from the server’s city, and Marketplace can take that as where you are. To shop another region on purpose, change the Marketplace location instead.
Why is the location on my own listing wrong?
A new listing can pick up the location Marketplace has for you when you post, so a wrong Marketplace location ends up on the listing. Edit the listing and change its location (Meta has a help page for it), then fix your Marketplace location so the next one starts right.
